Breaking the Binary is a collection of portrait images from 24 people, composed alongside text, arranged within a zine format that engages with the trans/non-binary community. The work aims to showcase the everyday lives and personal perspectives of being within the trans community compared to hypervisible imagery from trans celebrities in the media, which often overgeneralise the community. As a queer photographer but cisgendered, I approached this project through a respectful methodology through conducting informal interviews and creating comfortable environments for photoshoots. The informal discussions have been a crucial element in grounding and exploring opinions of representation through the ideologies and beliefs of models, relating to gender politics and giving voice to people other than celebrities. In the finished zine of the project, the text and images coincide, creating a personal approach towards the opinions and choices of representation of the trans/non-binary community.
